British singer-songwriter Charli XCX has worked her ass off to achieve the success she has been seeing this past year. From a prominent feature on Iggy Azalea's number one smash "Fancy" to her first solo top ten hit with "Boom Clap", the 22-year-old shows no signs of slowing down just yet. Charli XCX presents the rebellious "
Break the Rules", the official second single off her upcoming
Sucker album.
"
Break the Rules" brings back the loud and abrasive attitude we have come to expect from the artist, following her soft and sweet turn on her last effort. The pop song is a feisty and explosive anthem about not giving a damn, simply wanting to do what one wishes. Similar in sound to most of the artist's previous album, the new single sums up Charli XCX's style in the infectious three and a half minute stomper.
"
Boys and girls across the world, putting on our dancing shoes, going to the discotheque, getting high and getting wrecked," the "I Love It" songwriter chants on the carefree chorus of the synth-pop/punk effort. There's not much lyrical depth on the track, the typical ode to partying and dancing the night away, but it is the artist's 90s-like performance which really sells the material this time around.
Charli XCX has technically been on the scene since 2008, but it was just the past year when she gained a strong audience. She is a brilliant hit songwriter and a terrific vocalist, "
Break the Rules" is another critically-acclaimed step in the right direction for the young artist. The song showcases a sassy, rebellious personality and the ability to craft a mean hook.
