Jason Wu for Caudalie - Beauty Elixir

Hi everyone,

Today I have a review of a cult product that so many people love and adore, it's....Caudalie Beauty Elixir! And icing on the cake, in an outstanding and luxury packaging!

The story behind this cult product
This Beauty Elixir was inspired by Queen Isabelle of Hungary. She called it her elixir of youth! It is said that thanks to the brightness of her complexion she was able to seduce the King of Poland who was of thirty-five years her junior. Following this discovery, Mathilde Thomas, then in full creation of Caudalie, decided to rework the original formula to deliver a contemporary version in line with the expectations of the men and women of today. In 1997 “L’Eau de Beauté” or the "Beauty Elixir" was born.

Packaging
This year, Caudalie has collaborated with Jason Wu for a limited edition of the Beauty Elixir.
Symbol of modern femininity, the bottle he created for Caudalie is dressed in a finely worked lace inspired by his Spring / Summer 2016 collection. The bottle is also crowned with a delicate golden piece reminiscent of Jason Wu accessories.

I think we all agree that the packaging is gorgeous. It's a true pleasure to look at and it looks so nice on your vanity :p
The product is delivered via a pump to finely and evenly distribute the lightweight mist. The mist is really fine. This way, you can use it over your makeup without ruining it.

The claims
Accordig to Caudalie, this powerful plant based anti-dull complexion treatment smooths away fine lines, tightens pores and gives the complexion an instant boost of radiance.

          - Smooths away fine lines
          - Tightens pores
          - Sets make-up
          - Gives a boost of radiance

What is exactly the Beauty Elixir?
It's a water-alcoholic based solution containing bitter orange flower water and different essential oils, such as rosemary, peppermint, balm mint, and rose. It also contains grape, benzoin, and myrrh extracts. Ingredients are 100% from natural origin. From a personal point of view, I don't really care if it's 100% natural or not because some synthetic ingredients are totally safe and fine to use and sometimes even better than natural ingredients. But I know some people are sensitive to the natural aspect of cosmetics, that's why I mention it.

Ingredients:
AQUA (WATER), ALCOHOL*, CITRUS AURANTIUM AMARA (BITTER ORANGE) FLOWER WATER*, PARFUM (FRAGRANCE)*, ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS (ROSEMARY) LEAF OIL*, POTASSIUM ALUM, GLYCERIN*, MENTHA PIPERITA (PEPPERMINT) OIL*, STYRAX TONKINENSIS RESIN EXTRACT*, COMMIPHORA MYRRHA RESIN EXTRACT*, MELISSA OFFICINALIS (BALM MINT) LEAF OIL*, ROSA DAMASCENA FLOWER OIL*, VITIS VINIFERA (GRAPE) FRUIT EXTRACT*, TOCOPHEROL*, CITRAL*, LIMONENE*, LINALOOL*, CITRONELLOL*, GERANIOL*, FARNESOL*, BENZYL BENZOATE*, EUGENOL*, *Plant origin

Thoughts and how I use it
For me, that's typically a formula that I would not recommend for sensitive skin because of the high alcohol content and all the frangrant plant oils it contains. The alcohol can be drying and the fragrant plant oils can be irritating for the skin.

That said, I have sensitive skin and I really like the smell of this Beauty Elixir. It does smell very refreshing and is quite unique. But note that the smell is quite strong so some people may like it while others may not.
Because I really wanted to like this product, I've found a way of using it without being worried about the alcohol and fragrance. I've actually heard that Lisa Eldridge does this with this product and I find it very clever! So what I do is spray it on my hands and rub them together, then breathe it in. It smells amazing and so refreshing. And then, I just pat it on my skin.
When you do it so, the alcohol and fragrant elements evaporate (and you can enjoy the scent of them) and what you apply to your face are the non volatile elements that do not cause any irritation issues. Isn't it awesome?

So yes, I wouldn't recommend spraying it directly on your face but rather spray it on your hands, rub them, enjoy the smell, and then pat on the leftover! Don't forget to shake the bottle before use to mix the oils that float at the surface of the water.
I keep the bottle at the office (and make my colleagues jealous because the bottle looks so pretty :D ) and use it when I start feeling tired because I find the smell invigorating and it just boosts my mood up. I prefer using it like that because for me, it's more a fragrance than a true skincare product.

And you, have you tried Caudalie's Beauty Elixir?
